WTF QR Codes

I find it a personal pet peeve when people try and use the new “it”  thing and completely play it out. If something is up and coming.. research people! Learn how it’s used. Study best practices. Sure, testing is involved but use your head people.

The latest thing to be using on Billboards and Ads over the past year are QR Codes. I’m sure you’ve seen them before. Little square barcodes you scan with your smartphones. When used properly they take you to a Landing Page or Website.

When not used properly.. Well, you can see below. Check out the full list after the jump.

PETA’s Controversial Ad

There have been many instances in movies, clothing and other animal related activity that have walked a fine line in “insulting” PETA. However, this time PETA may be the ones crossing that line. Or are they?

A new ad from PETA has raised many eyebrows. Jessica, the star of the spot is walking home in a neck brace and “suffers from BWVAKTBOOM, ‘Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom Out of Me,’ a painful condition that occurs when boyfriends go vegan and can suddenly bring it like a tantric porn star.”

Sure, they may be promoting the fact that a clean vegan diet can raise your libido but is this promoting domestic abuse? It’s an interesting take on a serious matter. Especially a group so involved with ending abuse to animals. What do you think?

This Valentine’s Day, give and you shall receive

First off, Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!

Being the ad geek that I am – my boyfriend often shares ads and commercials he sees with me if he thinks they’re good. This commercial was on last night and he thought it was a) hilarious and b) probably true.

I googled it this morning, and realized I had seen it during the superbowl. As with a few other companies (H&M, GoDaddy and let us not forget the Sexy and I know it – M&M commercial) we know that the main goal when making a commercial is grabbing the attention of the viewier.

Sex sells.

TeleFlora created this ad with Supermodel Adriana Lima. sidenote: that body has had a child and her name is Valentina – how appropriate

Giving the world known advice. “Give and you Shall Receive”

Cute, funny, sexy.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

How to Create the Perfect Movie Poster [infographic]

It’s always a treat going to the movies. With prices these days ($11, unreal) – I take my time in picking the movies I just can’t wait until DVD release. When I leave I often walk slowly and check up on upcoming movie posters. Taking a mental note on something I’ll be looking forward to seeing the trailer for. Usually, what grabs my eye is something simple that you really have to look at to see what movie is. (I know, you get it – I’m a big fan of understated).

However, what are best practices for making these posters? Check out this infographic to see what works!

Underwater Dog Photography

I’ve always been jealous of people who own dogs that LOVE to swim. I’ve had four dogs in the course of my lifetime and all of them hated going in the water. I’d envy my friends who could throw a tennis ball into a lake or pool and have their dog JOYFULLY jump in after.

Genius Seth Casteel took these shots underwater. Something I’ve never seen done before. The faces are hilarious. Enjoy!

This one might be my favorite.

What’s in a name?

You can’t be a lover of all things Advertising, without giving homage to the heart of the creativity.. the agencies. Usually, these names are taken from the owner. ( ex. Ogilvy & Mather)

What about the ones with a little more..spunk in coming up with a name. AdWeek put together a list of some great and unusual agency names.

Lisa Frank Adult Clothes?!

Lisa Frank.. queen of the 90s has decided to make clothing for adults. First of all where was this when I was a kid. I wanted a plastic covered colored unicorn fleece and or flannel hat!

Girls (and boys, hey – no judgement) of the 90’s – Rejoice!

ChapStick is lacking in “fans” for this one!

We’ve all seen the print ads. The shock value, can-they-really-do-that ads. Personally, this one is very low on the “shock value” totum poll of advertisements if you ask me. I’ve seen a lot worse in an Abercrombie & Fitch storefront. ANYWAY I digress, Chapstick released the following picture on their site as well as their Facebook page.

The readers digest version: Blogger talks about how upset she is over this, goes to the Facebook page to complain. ChapStick then starts deleting comment after comment (instead of just deleting the damn picture, wouldn’t that have saved a lot of trouble?) People are livid and the rest is history. They “apologized” and I use that term loosely.

Personally, they should have quit while they were ahead. Now they just have a heck of a lot of angry people. And a lot of people like me, blogging about it. Some may not even dig around in old purses now to find that last big of Cherry Flavor Balm. Way to go guys. (Don’t worry I’m not that bent out of shape enough for that fiasco)

Check out AdFreaks take on it here.

What do we think all? Is this too much for a Lip Balm ad? Or is this my life on a daily basis (no judgement).

Welcome to the Future

You know its a new era when a baby thinks a magazine is a broken iPad.

Watch as an adorable one-year old is trying to flip through a magazine like they’re used to doing with a simple swipe of their little fingers.

Too funny!

Brad Paisley says it best. Welcome to the Future.
